Album covers by artists: Laurie Simmons

The Talking Heads 1985 single And She Was (taken from the Little Creatures album) was released in the UK as a three-track 12" picture disk, featuring the song in both original and extended versions, plus the album-track Perfect World. The disk graphic is by New York artist Laurie Simmons, who is also included in the Talking Heads Book What the Songs Look Like, illustrating the same song.

Amazon sellers list the disk around $15 and the book between $12 and $60 (for some reason).

Simmons appears, more or less playing herself, in the film Tiny Furniture, which was directed by her daugher Lena Dunham, and also features her younger daughter Grace (Simmons' parter, the painter Carroll Dunham, is curiously absent from the film). The title refers to Simmons' use of miniatures in her photography, which can be seen in both of the works for the Talking Heads.

After the success of the film, which was released on Criterion earlier this year, Dunham was given the opportunity to write, direct, produce and star in a series for HBO, called Girls. It debuted with a strong pilot last week, and the second episode airs tonight. Also on HBO tonight (yes, this post was a thin excuse to talk about TV, while throwing to yesterday's Record Store Day) is Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld), Tony Hale (Arrested Development) and Anna Chlumsky (In the Loop, My Girl). The series is created by Armando Iannucci (I'm Alan Partridge, The Day Today, Time Trumpet), based on his UK series The Thick of It, which ranks amongst my very favorite television shows ever.
